Regarding Miss M, Taxman and I worked out a few things a long time ago.
1. She is really bright.
2. She has a talent for the visual arts.
3. She uses her mind in ways that we, mere mortals and ordinary people, cannot possibly understand.
We clash with Miss M over all manner of things. Office supplies, for instance. For her, they are like the very air she breathes–necessary and unlimited. To us, they are finite, have specific uses, and are twice as expensive in Israel as in the United States.
AM gets dessert taken away for running into the street. Miss M gets dessert taken away for using up a roll of Scotch tape without permission.
When I bought a small amount of ribbon for wrapping gifts, I saw her eyeing and calculating. It was very inexpensive, so I told her I would take her to buy her own. She spent three shekel (less than a dollar) of her savings on two kinds of ribbon, and it got squirreled away with the rest of the art supplies.
Then we had friends over to play. The five year old girls disappeared, and it was quiet. Oddly so. Then they come prancing out in “shoes” of Miss M’s design. (I didn’t take pictures then; these are a re-enactment.)
I kid you not.
And these came from her head. I am not a gladiator sandal kind of person. Up until two months ago I hadn’t worn sandals in about 25 years. Now I own these (in another color) and these in black patent leather. Which are SO NOT THE SAME as what came out of her head.
She also tried to make a pair of flip-flops out of cereal-box cardboard and ribbon, but “they didn’t work,” as she explained.
I know that people think that I am ridiculous for worrying so much about Miss M’s future educational possibilities, because she’s not even six. But we’ve already known for years that she is out of the box. We’re just trying to plan…just a little bit, because we’re already holding on by our fingertips.
Also: this is why I feel guilty for making her clean up. (It’s a fight every time, which is partially her personality outside of this, but also because I never know what creative process I am interrupting.)
