Like a lot of olim, I have a problem keeping track of the days of the week. Sunday is a regular work day, which screws up my head, and I am off for the rest of the week. Although around midweek things change, and Thursday always feels like Wednesday to me, which is a shame because it means I am usually behind in my Shabbat preparations.
So I don’t know what day of the week it is, usually, and then on top of that I have no idea what month it is. I mean, if I thought about it for a length of time I’d come up with December (probably), but only after a serious pause. The blame for that goes in part to living in a place where the dominant December culture does not revolve around Christmas and its accompaniments (food, gifts, etc.), but also in part to the weather. Even without a white Christmas, the weather in the Mid-Atlantic/New England (where I spent most of my life) gets cold this time of year. Here, within sight of the Mediterranean–on a clear day, anyway–the winter so far has consisted of some rain, some chilly mornings and evenings, and some downright warm noontimes.
So as far as I’m concerned, it’s a Wednesday in October. We’ll see if December ever happens.
