I mostly agree with Kristof’s op-ed; the disagreement stems from the part about political capital in the Middle East.
For what it’s worth, I did vote for Obama because I thought he had a better vision for Americans* than McCain. I am not exactly sure why the Nobel committee is ready to reward the rhetoric without any results on the ground. The other prizes (Medicine, Chemistry, Literature, etc.) come after years of toiling in one’s chosen field, not at the beginning of a new venture.
*NB: not Americans in Israel or anywhere else in the world. Americans living in the United States.
